1.LECTURE

In this week’s lecture, we mainly learned how to use Photoshop features to integrate a person’s photo into a scene photo (Project1B Part 1), and how to colorize black-and-white photos using Photoshop (Project1B Part 2).

  • For the first part of Project 1B, we downloaded a photo of a standing person and a scene photo from Google Drive respectively. Following the tutorial, I integrated the person into the scene:
import the person’s photo into Photoshop > use the Magic Wand Tool to remove the person’s background > import the background-free person into the scene photo > hold down Shift and use the Move Tool to adjust the person’s image to an appropriate size > create a new layer below the layer containing the person’s image, and use the Brush Tool to draw the person’s shadow > adjust the shadow’s opacity > adjust the saturation, hue, brightness, and other settings of the person’s image > duplicate the person’s image, flip it vertically to add a reflection for the person, and adjust the reflection’s saturation, hue, and brightness > finish

  • After completing Part 1, we moved on to the second tutorial, where we learned how to colorize black-and-white photos using Photoshop:
Import the black-and-white photo and color photos downloaded from Google Drive > use the Eyedropper Tool to extract the colors needed for the black-and-white photo from the color photos > use the Lasso Tool to select the areas on the black-and-white photo that need to be colored > select overlay, refine edge brush tool > refine the edges using brush tool > select output to layer mask > Create new solid layer, choose color > drop the layer mask to new solid layer to replace layer mask > Change the layer mode as needed > finish

2. PRACTICAL

We first followed the steps in the video tutorial to complete the first exercise, which allowed us to grasp the techniques in the tutorial well.

PROJECT 1B: PART 1 A (Hearst Mansion: Exercise Demo)

After following the tutorial to complete the first exercise, we were asked to take or select a photo of ourselves, then use the same method to place ourselves into a scene photo.
The process of independently integrating our own photos into scene photos was a great opportunity to apply the techniques learned from the tutorial more proficiently, helping us master the content of the tutorial.

PROJECT 1B: PART 2 A (Recolouring B & W photo) Demo exercise

In the exercises for the second part, I also followed the tutorial to colorize two different black-and-white photos. After learning the techniques for coloring black-and-white photos from the video tutorial, we were allowed to choose colors different from those used in the demonstration to complete the exercises.

2. PROJECT 1B - PART 2: Recoloring Black and White

PROJECT 1B: PART 2 B (Recolouring B & W photo) Extra exercise

After following the tutorial to finish the first two exercises, we downloaded black-and-white photos different from those in the tutorial from Google Drive and used the skills learned in the tutorial to complete the coloring independently.
