4. REFLECTION
Experience:
This was a demanding semester, but I feel I benefited immensely. During
this semester, we learned fun techniques for creating fonts, designed our
own logos, and gained a deeper understanding and experience of the
fundamentals and practices of typography. In the process, I gradually
appreciated the charm of typography, and I think I will continue to study
typography in the future, even if it's not part of my undergraduate
curriculum. What impressed me most was the font I designed in Task 3. When I
completed them in Adobe Illustrator and generated them into a usable font, I
felt a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Even though my task was
simply to redesign an existing font, I was still moved when I typed my name
using the font I designed on the computer. In short, in this module, I
gained my own typography work and many valuable experiences. Looking back
now, I'm so glad I managed to snag Mr. Vinod's lecture when choosing my
schedule. He taught us to think independently and taught me to put more
effort into my work and take the risk of failure. It was a difficult step
because nobody likes to fail, but it was a necessary one because it made us
brave enough to grow.
3.2 Observations
After these 14 weeks of study, I’ve come to realize that typography
isn’t as simple as it appears. Typographic practice has evolved and
developed countless times over the course of typographers confronting
and solving different problems again and again, ultimately forming the
system we study today. Even individual letters are worthy of study:
uppercase and lowercase letters of different styles have distinct
structures and consist of numerous components (such as strokes,
swashes, etc.), yet type families adhere to a unified set of basic
rules. In typography, details like letter spacing and line spacing
also play significant roles in the work. Throughout this semester’s
studies, while completing my own tasks, I often got to see my
classmates’ work. One obvious observation I made is that they paid
attention to making their typography appealing while placing equal
emphasis on readability—and I believe this is an extremely important
aspect of typographic work.
