3. TECHNIQUES APPLIED

Week5

This week, we focused primarily on learning how to use Adobe Illustrator to turn vector illustrations with environmental preview into collectible cards. I think this is the most essential skill we need to complete Task 2.

Week6

In the Week 6 lectures, we deepened our understanding of composition theories and various compositional forms (such as the rule of thirds, golden ratio, Radal, etc.). Through the instructor’s demonstration, we also mastered how to use tools in Adobe Illustrator to complete our final compositional artworks.

Week7
This week, the professor showed us how to use AI to add different styles of fonts to our card designs.

Additional techniques that I researched on my own:

I used Google Chrome to look up tips on converting bitmaps to vector graphics using Adobe Illustrator:

Import a PNG or JPG image → Use the Selection Tool to select the image → Click "Image Trace" → Adjust the "Preset" and "Parameters" as needed (Preset: [Custom]; Threshold: 0; Path: 50%; Corners: 50%; Noise: 5px) → Expand → Ungroup

4.Self Reflection

Turning the character I designed into a card was my favorite part of Task 3. It was fun and meaningful to watch my character design and composition come together little by little, eventually becoming a finished card. The final product gave me a great sense of achievement.

Looking at my submitted work, I think the foreground and midground in the composition are fine, but the background is where I feel there’s room for improvement. I realized that when creating the composition, I focused most of my energy on drawing the birds in the foreground, while the background only has two rockeries and the sky—this makes the background look a bit plain compared to the foreground and midground. I believe adding some elements to the background appropriately, or reducing some elements in the foreground, might make the scene composition more balanced.
