REFLECTION

Experience

I benefited greatly from this module. It helped me step into the world of thesis research, teaching me how to conduct a study and what to pay attention to during the process. Initially, I struggled, partly because it was my first time learning research methods, something I knew almost nothing about before, and partly because I needed to spend considerable time reading literature and references to facilitate my learning. For the first two months, I was constantly encountering and learning new knowledge, continuously enriching my understanding of this module. I must say, no task was easy; even Task 1 required multiple improvements before I achieved a satisfactory result. However, the patient feedback from the instructors and the ability to refine my research were crucial factors in my continuous progress. With weekly lectures and continuous learning through various materials, I became increasingly familiar with research methodologies in the latter two months of the semester. To present better results, I began to focus more on the rigor of my research. I spent an exceptionally large amount of time on data collection and analysis. From the materials provided by the professor, I gained a deeper understanding of data analysis methods adapted to quantitative research. I looked up the specific steps and began learning and experimenting step by step, calculating and analyzing various data such as the mean, variance, regression slope, and correlation coefficient based on the data I collected. This was a completely new world for me, and in the process, I learned many useful calculation methods and the concepts and uses of different data, further expanding my knowledge of research methodology, which left a deep impression on me. Although my research may not be perfect and is subject to limitations, I believe it is a good start, enabling me to achieve better results in future research.

Observation

In learning this module, the first skill I encountered was finding and browsing relevant literature that was helpful to my research direction. Initially, I tried using my entire research topic as search keywords, but the results were scarce. Later, with the advice of my teachers and friends, I began searching using only keywords from my research topic. This indeed revealed many helpful documents. I also observed that many documents, although not directly related to my research topic, contained aspects that were very helpful to my research. For example, when describing my research problem, the background information on video games I referenced came from some research on video games. Later, when learning and choosing research methods, I chose convenience sampling and snowball sampling in quantitative research. To better understand these methods, I also used many research papers in related fields. This not only enriched my knowledge base but also broadened my thinking about my research, which was very helpful to me.

Findings

In conducting this research, I discovered the extreme importance of rationality and objectivity. One must avoid subjectively introducing one's own biases and instead objectively analyze the evidence, approaching the research with a rational mindset. It must be said that, having read numerous relevant documents before determining my research topic, and considering that characters and scenes are two core elements of video games, their impact on player retention cannot be ignored. Therefore, when I decided to study the influence of character emotional design and scene visual design on player retention from the perspective of character-scene synergy, I repeatedly assumed that my research results would show that this synergy significantly impacts player retention. However, when I objectively and rigorously calculated and analyzed the data I collected, the results showed that players' perception of the synergy between character emotional design and scene visual design was not the primary factor influencing their retention. Only when I obtained this result did I deeply realize the necessity of conducting this research.
